General Harald Kujat, chairman of NATO's military committee, said Wednesday (17 November) the Alliance will step up counter-terrorist intelligence exchanges with Israel and six Arab nations. "This is something we really want to accelerate," Kujat said. Generals from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia met with Kujat at the Euro Mediterranean Security meeting in Brussels. He described the meeting as a "big success" that would be repeated next year.

In the meantime, lower level talks with the countries will flesh out more areas of co-operation. These will range from joint military exercises with NATO to armed forces training to help against drug trafficking or assistance in coping with natural disasters. (AP)
