Algerian Electricity Company Searches for Meter Fraud
2004-11-12
According to local Algerian press reports, the gas and electric company, Sonelgaz, is lashing out against electricity fraud, from individuals to large-scale industries. An estimated 20 per cent of electricity revenues are lost due to fraud. In the past, the company closely inspected electric meter boxes because electricians can easily disconnect devices and use electricity free of charge.
Songelaz has launched similar campaigns in the past, but with greater government pressure in advance of possible privatisation, the company is more serious in its efforts this time around. (albawaba.com)
