EU Counter-Terrorism Co-ordinator Gijs de Vries said on Wednesday (10 November) the Union is seeking closer co-operation with Morocco and Algeria to boost intelligence on suspected militant networks in both countries. "The EU has approached both governments with a view to increasing our co-operation," de Vries said regarding his recent visits to Algeria and Morocco.
Western security sources are concerned by evidence since the 11 March Madrid train bombings suggesting the presence of entrenched militant networks in Europe closely linked to North Africa. De Vries said Morocco and Algeria have taken steps in fighting terrorism. He cited Rabat's request for help in tackling terrorists' finances and Algiers asking for aid to set up a law enforcement training centre. (Reuters)
