Morocco Faces Shanty Town Issue
2004-11-09
Abdelaziz Filali, executive director of the Moroccan Slum Upgrading Agency, said in a radio interview that while some 90,000 dwellings are built in Morocco annually, 125,000 households still need housing. Filali said among these households, about 40,000 opt for shantytowns and irregular housing. According to Filali, more than 50 per cent of Casablanca is composed of shantytowns. "We have 445 shantytowns in Casablanca and each one needs specific intervention," Filali said. (menareport.com)

Are there any solutions for this phenomenon, and what are the causes of this despairing phenomenon?

I think that the strategy adopted by officials won't be useful for anyone.

Some of the problems hindering Moroccans today are shanty towns especially in the town of Tifelt. In reality, I was saddened but that sight. I was surprised, therefore, to see people and their lives. Therefore, we want a solution to this problem firstly because there are other important problems. Therefore, we ask the state to consider these miserable people. Chairman and representatives in the state should take care of that and try to reform these problems. They should stop stealing, bribery and all these evil phenomena. Salam.
