After a series of stormy sessions, the Algerian Parliament votes on the 2005 budget law Tuesday (9 November). The Finance Select Committee rejected a series of last minute amendments Saturday. A core debate over raising gas bills by 5 dinars is a central issue in the budget law. Government ministers tried to convince parliament members the tax will lead to positive changes in carbon emissions in Algeria, particularly by encouraging unleaded fuel.
Water issues have also stirred parliamentary debate. Minister of Water Resources Abdelmalek Sellal proposed a 5-dinar tax to develop water resources. There is also a proposed tax on medicine. (menareport.com)
