The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced receiving $52.4m to fight the locust plague sweeping North Africa. According to a statement released at the FAO Dakar office, the organisation supplied $6m of its own funds to fight locusts, and is still waiting for $15m of additional funds from donors. These funds will help it purchase more pesticides in addition to the two million litres of pesticides already purchased. Fourteen aircraft are contracted by the FAO and others are supplied on a bilateral and national basis for spraying pesticide. (La Nouvelle Republique)
