Draft Political Parties Legislation Presented in Morocco
2004-11-05
To establish a political party, the founder must be a registered voter
Moroccan Interior Minister Mostafa Sahel presented a draft law to political party leaders this week. Parties have one month to study the law and make recommendations. The new law forbids establishing parties on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity or region. Political parties can qualify for registration only if 10,000 signatures are obtained and 1,500 members must attend a congress to demonstrate real interest in the party. To establish a political party, the founder must be a registered voter and believe in and abide by democratic principles to allow participation by all party members. (Khaleej Times)
