Moroccan Minister of Agriculture Mohand Laensar announced that about 400,000 hectares of land were sprayed with pesticides through October to thwart the locust onslaught. The minister said 50 per cent of the sprayed areas were in Guelmim, Tiznit and Taroudant in southern Morocco, an area hit especially hard by locusts. Morocco spent 45m euros this year to combat locusts by mobilising 28 planes and helicopters, as well as hundreds of vehicles to spray pesticides. Holland donated has 1.5m euros to purchase such vehicles. (menareport.com)
