France supports a political solution to the Western Sahara issue within the UN framework, according to comments by a foreign ministry spokesperson on Friday (29 October). Last week, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1570 to extend the UN mission mandate in Southern Morocco until 30 April. Morocco's Permanent Representative to the UN, Mohamed Bennouna, said his government is willing to participate in "a viable and appropriate autonomy" for Morocco's southern provinces. Meanwhile, Polisario Front leader Mohamed Abdelaziz said on Saturday the Western Saharan independence movement reserves the right to take up arms against Morocco but is currently seeking a peaceful solution.
