Algerian Military Procession Cancelled

2004-10-28

[AFP]

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced that he is canceling a military procession to mark the 50th anniversary of Algeria's war of independence. He said Algeria is committed to peace and will only conduct civilian ceremonies to mark the occasion. The presidential announcement is probably linked to rising tensions with Morocco over the Western Sahara. The Algerian Army has not paraded in a decade.

On a related note, Bouteflika granted 3,800 presidential pardons to mark the 50th anniversary. This would apply to roughly 10 per cent of the prison population and includes only those convicted of lesser crimes. Many of those pardoned were involved in corruption, traffic offenses, or some other minor offense. (albawaba.com)

I hope that you will present solutions to solve the problem of borders.

I strongly support the cancellation of this military procession because I think that we have not spread out our property enough. Our weapons have become double-edged: either they are too sophisticated, in which case they attract envy and make us a target like in Iraq’s case, or they are insignificant, in which case the risk is also great because they become a sign of our weakness. The word of the day is “discretion”.
