Renewal Movement opposition party leader Mohamed Ali Al-Helwani protested the results of Sunday's (24 October) presidential election. A spokesman for his party said the results underestimated the intelligence of Tunisians. Official results show that President Ben Ali won 94.48 per cent of the votes. The secretary general of the Progressive Democratic Party, Ahmad Najib al-Shabi, whose party boycotted the elections, also condemned the results, noting that a participation rate of 91.5 per cent is unrealistic. Joining in the criticism was Chairman of the Democratic Forum for Freedoms, Mustafa Bin Jaafar who said the election results do not comply with the will of people. (ArabicNews)
