The daily L'Economiste ran data Sunday (24 October) on infant mortality rates in North Africa and the Middle East. In Morocco, the neonatal mortality has decreased from 46 per 1,000 in 1979 to 27 per 1,000 today. In terms of infant mortality -- children under the age of five -- the rate has dropped from 91 per 1,000 children to 40. This remains high for the region: Tunisia records a rate of 21 deaths per 1,000 children, Syria has 20, Jordan has 22, and Algeria has 32. (L'Economiste)
