Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia are listed among six countries that will benefit from a new financing programme, part of the US Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). The US State Department announced on Friday (22 October) awards of an additional $18.5m in economic support for democracy-building programmes in Jordan, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The programmes ''focus on our effort to help these people, civic organisations, citizens' groups, and educational institutions in these countries to reform and develop," said Adam Ereli, deputy State Department spokesman. The $18.5m is the final part of $129m allocated by MEPI in 2002 and 2003. (El Youm, AFP)
