US Diplomat Urges Dialogue Between Morocco, Algeria on Sahara Issue
2004-10-22
US Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East William Burns said Thursday (21 October) that Washington is committed to a political settlement of the Sahara issue. During a joint press briefing with Moroccan Foreign Minister Mohamed Benaissa, he called for dialogue between Morocco and Algeria. Burns said Washington would continue to encourage the two countries to "improve their bilateral relationship in order to create a better atmosphere for both Moroccans and Algerians, and the Maghreb as a whole, and ultimately to find a political solution to the Sahara question". He also praised Morocco’s decision to lift visa requirement for Algerian citizens. The United States will continue to support the efforts of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his representative to work with the parties, Burns added. (MAP)
