Algeria's government has said it will take strong measures to counter strikes, particularly in the health sector. Measures include refusing to pay those on strike, taking the unions to court, and threatening to cancel the licenses of doctors who are not working. Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia has vowed to "break" the strikes, saying the health sector disruptions in particular are having a severe effect on society. The issue comes at a tricky time for the government, which had pledged to engage in "social dialogue" but is facing a public finance squeeze. Responding to union demands, authorities insist boosting salaries would compromise macroeconomic stability. (albawaba.com)
