HRW Report Notes Human Rights Progress in Morocco
2004-10-22
Morocco has made impressive strides in human rights over the past 15 years
According to a Human Rights Watch report published Thursday (21 October), Morocco has made impressive strides in human rights over the past 15 years. At the same time, however, the report notes a "backsliding" in the protection of civil liberties and basic freedoms as a result of measures taken to fight terrorism. The document devotes several chapters to the Justice and Reconciliation Commission established in January and to the performance of the Moroccan justice system following the Casablanca terrorist attacks of May 2003. It also praises Moroccan authorities’ constructive responses to human rights criticism in 2004. (MAP)
