Algerian dockworkers are rejecting foreign partnerships and privatisation, according to the secretary general of the Central Union, Abdelmadjid Sidi-Said. He said there would be a half-day protest on Sunday (24 October) to protest opposition to such moves. The Porters' Union in Algiers, meanwhile, said plans for privatisation would affect the 15,000 dockworkers who run the country's ten ports. The unions also insist the government is moving too quickly and without consulting them.
In other news, the government ordered Health Minister Mourad Redjimi to take steps to deal with the strike started by various union healthcare workers, including doctors. The measures include withholding pay and taking the unions to court for "disturbing the public health service". (menareport.com, El Khabar)
