Spain to Promote Morocco’s Dialogue With EU on Fisheries Agreement
2004-10-21
Morocco did not renew its existing fisheries agreement with the EU when it expired in November 1999
Spain will try to promote dialogue between Morocco and the EU on relaunching negotiations over a new fisheries agreement. Spanish Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Elena Espinosa said Wednesday (20 October) that Morocco and Spain share the same resolve "to broaden their co-operation in all fisheries-related sectors". Morocco did not renew its existing fisheries agreement with the EU when it expired in November 1999. Despite efforts by both parties during subsequent talks, no new agreement was hammered out and negotiations were suspended. About 600 EU-registered fishing vessels, most of them Spanish, had to cease operations in Moroccan waters. (Al Ahdat Al Maghribia)
