Algeria Closes Industries Due to Pollution

The Algerian government announced Saturday (27 November) the closure of some 100 factories and arrested 120 people for violating environmental standards. Environment Minister Cherif Rahmani said authorities closed an additional 380 waste disposal businesses, adding that the government plans to file over 1,000 lawsuits. Rahmani said that although Algeria is making progress with environmental protection, more vigilance is needed to monitor waste disposal. (The Washington Times)
