Khalifa extradition ruling delayed until December
2009-10-26
The British government will postpone deciding Algeria's extradition request for convicted billionaire swindler Rafik Khalifa until December, Tout sur l'Algerie reported. Describing the case as "sensitive" and "complicated", British Ambassador to Algiers Andrew Henderson on Sunday (October 25th) said the London court "needs more time". In 2007, Khalifa was sentenced in absentia to life in prison on fraud charges surrounding Algeria's largest-ever financial scandal. He is also wanted in France on embezzlement charges and for alleged involvement in the collapse of Khalifa Airways, Antinéa Airlines and Khalifa Rent-a-Car.
