Morocco parliament adds 3 women, PAM wins most seats

2009-10-05

Three women deputies joined Morocco's upper house of Parliament on Friday, following the triennial renewal of one-third of the Chamber of Councillors' membership. MAP reported on Sunday (October 4th). New MP Souad Laghmari of Citizens' Forces said that increasing women's participation in political life is a great achievement for a country striving for democracy.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party also gained 22 of the 81 seats up for mandatory renewal. The results confirm the party's sweep of the June 12th communal elections, said PAM member Lhabib Belkouch. The Istiqlal Party finished second with 17 seats.
