Lebanon convicts 3 for failed Libyan PM assassination plot

A Lebanese court sentenced three men to life imprisonment with hard labour for plotting to kill Libyan Prime Minister al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi, international press reported on Friday (October 2nd). Lebanese nationals Mehdi al-Hajj Hasan, his son Haidar al-Hajj Hasan and fugitive Libyan accomplice Abdel Salam Mohammed sent explosive substances by mail to Libya last June, but the package was intercepted by Lebanese security. Their plot aimed to avenge the disappearance of Shiite Imam Moussa Sadr. The Iranian-born founder of Lebanon's Amal movement and two companions went missing during an official visit to Libya in August 1978.
