Tunisia urges UN to empower international youth

2009-09-29

The world community can deter youth from extremism by making them "active stakeholders" in the decision-making process, Tunisian Foreign Minister Abdelwahab Abdallah told the UN General Assembly on Monday (September 28th). Abdallah was in New York to press the UN to adopt a Tunisian proposal that 2010 be declared "International Year of the Youth". Globalisation, he argued, requires nations to "listen" to young people in order to "preserve them from exclusion and marginalisation, protect them from the dangers of seclusion and extremism, as well as from carelessness and estrangement, while instilling in them the culture of tolerance and moderation".

Globalisation should no longer permit criminals to kidnap entire populations and dehumanise them. How can the leader of a regime guilty of marginalising an entire population dare to have the nerve to throw the blame for this marginalisation and alienation on the international community? What you are now preparing are rigged elections and violations of the Constitution, which hangs like a roll of toilet paper in the bathroom of your supporters, who are the ones doing the marginalising and alienating. As for tolerance and moderation, you should direct this language at your executioners, who rape and torture people in the prisons, police stations and cellars of the Ministry of the Interior in order to terrorise the population and deprive people of their rights. Never before your gang began to take an interest in human rights was Tunisia so bad off.
