2009-09-28
The Mauritanian army arrested seven armed al-Qaeda suspects near Lemgheity, some 1,000km northeast of Nouakchott, Journal Tahalil reported on Sunday (September 27th), adding that soldiers in the same north-east desert region have previously captured al-Qaeda "scouts" sent to Mauritania for "reconnaissance missions". In 2005, Lemgheity was the site of a GSPC terrorist attack that killed 15 Mauritanian soldiers.
