Al-Qaeda leader Droukdel seeks religious opinion on terrorist activities

2009-09-23

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb leader Abdelmalek Droukdel posted a letter on a renowned mufti's website seeking a fatwa to clarify "some religious issues", Echorouk reported on Tuesday (September 21st). In his letter, the al-Qaeda emir asserted that it was the first time that he had sought Cheikh Mohammed Al Moukaddessi's opinion.

Terrorism experts interviewed by the popular Algerian daily differed as to why Droukdel would contact the "spiritual father" of the terrorist organisation. Some say AQIM seeks to legitimise suicide and other attacks, while others suggest that Droukdel and his followers may be mulling repentance and reconciliation. The influential mufti has reportedly decried the killing of innocent civilians in the name of jihad.

In related news, an Algerian terrorist pursued for 15 years turned himself in to Algerian authorities on the second day of Eid al-Fitr, L'Expression and Ennahar reported on Tuesday (September 22nd). His family reportedly contacted Batna security services to arrange his surrender.

I have a “fatwa” for him and for all of his “followers”: In order to go to Heaven, they need to put themselves in a cave with no exit and to toss all the bombs they have at themselves and light them. They would all be killed – that is for sure – but they would go straight to Heaven, leaving all the other “non-believers” alone, yet sill alive in this world. This is surely the best service they could render to Islam and to all humanity. And, for once, they would serve some positive and humane purpose. Okay!? Amen.

It would be impossible for us, all the people of the Maghreb together, to be able to create a self-defence network for our Maghreb without hiding in caves and behind rocks to fight the evil eye to eye. Neither fatwas, nor democracy, nor religion nor any other therapeutic psychology can beat them even if it seems like it would be able to do so. Let us aim for the G7 and globalised, world-class extraction. It is through terrorism that we are killing ourselves in our own homes. Jihad is not Islamic; it is anti-Islamic.
