Morocco sees mobile, fixed telephony boom
2009-09-03
The number of mobile phone subscribers in Morocco grew by more than two million in the first half of 2009, compared to the same period last year, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) announced on Wednesday (September 2nd). The largest market share is held by Maroc Telecom (60.71%), while Medi Telecom has 36.69% and Wana has 2.6% of subscribers. The fixed telephony market also grew from 3.41% to 5.6% over the last quarter, MAP noted.
In related news, even though Emirati company Etisalat, the Arab world’s third-biggest telecommunications firm by market value, failed to secure a stake in Meditel, the company is still interested in the Moroccan telecom sector, Arab News reported. Etisalat spokesman Ahmed Bin Ali on Wednesday said his company sees Morocco as a "growth market".
