2009-08-09
A suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt near the French embassy compound in Nouakchott on Saturday evening (August 8th), local and international media reported. A Mauritanian woman and two French embassy guards were wounded in the 7 pm attack. Police identified bomber Hamdi Ould El Vih El Barka, 22, of south-west Mauritania's Brakna region, as a known terrorist, Nouakchott newspaper ANI reported. Late Saturday night, security officers investigating the embassy attack reportedly questioned two men already jailed over the 2008 beheading of 11 Mauritanian soldiers and a civilian guide in Aklet Tourine. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.
