Mauritania reduces bail for Air Mauritanie defendants

2009-05-19

A Mauritanian court on Monday (May 18th) reduced the bail for the Air Mauritanie liquidation case defendants, paving the way for their imminent release, Journal Tahalil reported. The prisoners include ousted Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed El Waghef. The previous bond - the highest ever set by a Mauritanian court - was challenged by the defence and denounced by opposition political parties as "excessive".

The release of this group of prisoners was one of the conditions set by the opposition to continue participation in Senegal's mediation initiative. Senegalese foreign minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio is expected to begin a second round of mediation talks on Tuesday, just 48 hours before the official start of the presidential campaign.
