Mauritania junta leader confirms presidential bid

Mauritania junta leader Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz announced on national radio Sunday (April 12th) that he would resign "before the end of the week" to run in the June 6th presidential elections, local and international press reported. Meanwhile, a delegation of the AU, led by Security Council president Ramtane Lamamra arrived Saturday in Nouakchott to continue mediation efforts aimed at ending the political crisis ahead of the elections.
In related news Saturday, a number of RFD party officials held a press conference to voice their support for participation in the upcoming presidential race. RFD party chief Ahmed Ould Daddah, who had called for an election boycott, blamed the junta for the split in his party.
