Voting begins in southeast Algeria

2009-04-06

Voters in Algeria's remote Illizi province (1300km southeast of Algiers) have the opportunity to cast their presidential ballots before the rest of the country, APS reported on Monday (April 6th). Fourteen mobile polling stations are opening 72 hours before Election Day on Thursday (April 9th), APS reported.

In related news, 200 international observers will monitor the elections, Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci said at a press conference on Sunday. "The observers came from many international organisations, including the Arab League with 87 and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference with 6 observers," Medelci was quoted by Echorouk as saying. Algeria has provided the international monitors with "all necessary means to ensure transparent elections", Medelci added.
