Mali arrests main suspect in tourist kidnappings
2009-03-25
The principal suspect in the kidnapping of four European tourists last December is in the custody of Malian authorities, following his arrest Tuesday in the north-western Malian region of Tombouctou, Mauritania's Journal Tahalil reported on Wednesday (March 25th). According to a security source quoted by AFP, the four tourists are being held by a different al-Qaeda group than the one responsible for abducting two Canadian diplomats in Niger last December. In February, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for all six kidnappings.
