Top al-Qaeda leader surrenders to Algerian authorities
2009-02-01
A leading member of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb turned himself in to Algerian security forces in Azazage, Tizi Ouzou province, late last week, local press reported on Sunday (February 1st). Ali Ben Touati, 39, alias Abou Tamim, joined the GSPC in 1997 and began leading the Al Ansar brigade in 2006. The 60-member brigade is reportedly the most important of the terrorist organisation's five constituent groups. Touati's surrender came in response to former GSPC chief Hassan Hattab's appeal for armed Islamist fighters to lay down their weapons, Tout sur l'Algerie quoted security sources as saying. Touati reportedly voiced his opposition of al-Qaeda chief Abdelmalek Droudkel's methods. Echourouk also quoted the terrorist as saying he was convinced of the reliability of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation.
