Bouteflika may announce presidential run next week
2009-01-21
Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will announce his intention to run for a third term on January 29th, El Watan reported on Tuesday (January 20th), citing a source from the ruling National Liberation Front (FLN). Also Tuesday, Tout sur l'Algerie quoted a source from the presidency as saying that Bouteflika's candidacy will be announced on February 2nd. Last Friday, FLN chief Abdelaziz Belkhadem said Bouteflika would run again but declined to give an exact date. He said Bouteflika, 71, would make an announcement once the country's electoral council meets, no later than 60 days before the elections.
In related news, Omar Bouacha, the president of the El Infitah movement, said Tuesday that his party was "determined to participate actively" in the next presidential election on a platform focused on youth and broader national issues.
