French court indicts Cheb Mami in forced abortion case
2009-01-16
French-Algerian rai singer Cheb Mami faces 10 years in prison and a 150,000 euro fine on charges of attempting a forced abortion on his ex-girlfriend, local and international press reported on Thursday (January 15th). A French criminal court in Bobigny, near Paris, returned indictments Wednesday against the 42-year-old singer and his manager. In the summer of 2005, the victim, a press photographer, was allegedly drugged and forcibly held in the singer's Algiers villa in 2005, where two women and a man attempted to perform an abortion, Tout sur l'Algerie reported.
In 2007, the singer posted a bond of 200,000 euros in France and returned to Algeria. Since then, he has been wanted on an international arrest from Interpol, which demanded that Algeria extradite him to France to stand trial. He remains at large in Algeria and denies his involvement.
After the incident, the woman returned to France and learned that the foetus was viable and decided to keep the child. Her daughter was born in March 2006.
