French first lady to donate to Morocco's anti-AIDS campaign

2008-12-21

Following a five-hour "Sidaction" televised anti-AIDS campaign, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy pledged to donate an unspecified amount to the cause in Morocco, AFP reported on Saturday (December 20th). Bruni-Sarkozy described the Sidaction event, held Friday, as a "unique example in Africa and the Arab world". Organised by the Moroccan Association against AIDS (ALCS), the event received pledges totalling 6.7 million dirhams, according to the local press.

Thank you, Miss First Lady, for your so very commendable and meaningful gesture. This was a real message of peace and solidarity between two peoples. This was a positive, clear and lucid lesson and sign to those who have resigned from the cause on all sides and to the Moroccan citizens (especially the Moroccan women) and all else obsessed with appearances and dangerously snub social works for people facing difficulties. Thank you a thousand times over.

That is fair, isn’t it?

Make a donation for people suffering from HIV in Morocco is a good thing, but I think that the number-one priority for this underdeveloped country should be to go support homeless children who do not go to school and who end up illiterate and, as a consequence, with a broken life. In effect, donations are not what are needed to fight AIDS, because, in any case, we must remember that it is an incurable affliction!!! But, it can be prevented through media and the school system. It would be better to help innocent children living on the street than people who took their own risks in bed.

Sidaction is a good initiative, but it needs to target adolescents in our high schools as well. Sexual maturity is attained when we are teenagers, and so it is natural that in spite of cultural and religious morals, the natural biological instinct to have sex will overcome some of our children. And we must understand that sex outside of marriage does never under any circumstances deserve death. Moreover, our teenagers will become adults and they will have to make adult decisions about having sex and about trusting their husbands and wives. It is important that our teenagers and our adults understand what the risks of infection are and how to prevent or reduce those risks. They must understand that they should not have unprotected sex unless they and their partners have both been tested for HIV and they are both faithful in their monogamous relationship. And, they must understand that if they ever doubt their partner’s fidelity, they are not only justified, but also recommended to refuse to have sex or at least to refuse to have unprotected sex. We must avoid judging others. This is about saving human lives – the noblest of human goals.
