MEDays Forum urges re-opening of Morocco-Algeria border

2008-11-30

Participants in the first MEDays Forum in Tangier on Friday (November 28th) called for urgent action to re-open borders between Morocco and Algeria. According to a statement issued after the debates on Friday, "Algeria needs to display responsibility and normalise its relations with neighbouring Morocco". The statement also calls for an "effective and sustainable revival" of the Arab Maghreb Union, in order to achieve better regional economic integration. The statement recommended a wide range of measures to fulfil the goals of the project for creation of a Euro-Mediterranean economic space, as well as to achieve economic cohesion and overcome inequality in development between the northern and the southern regions.

We ask the Algerian and Moroccan government to settle the conflict between them. They should let the poor people live freely and families who are in bad need for the borders to be opened.

Salam alikum Mr the king of Morocco and Mr the president of the Algerian Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Our hope in God and in you is great. Your conflicts are between you but the people have no conflicts. We, the tribe of Beni Yakfaa, hope that land borders be opened for visiting families which was recommended by God and His messenger. By God, this is a shame.

To the best of my knowledge, the border with Morocco is as open as a stable. Have you not noticed the drugs, weapons and alcohol trafficking through the territory of the so-called “Kingdom” of Morocco??? Enough already!

Salam alikum. May God strengthen your position Mr president and your Excellency the king. Your conflict is at the expense of the nation. Your joy and agreement is at their expense as well. I will have one word to say, both the European and African peoples are mocking you.
