Junta leader vows to fight terrorism in Mauritania
2008-10-03
Speaking on the occasion of the feast of Eid al-Fitr, the head of Mauritania's ruling junta reaffirmed his country's commitment to the fight against terrorism, APA reported on Thursday (October 2nd). As his country mourns the murder during Ramadan of 11 soldiers and a civilian guide by al-Qaeda, General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz urged citizens to "show solidarity" against terrorism and redouble their efforts "to build a strong and prosperous Mauritania". Aziz also promised to tackle poverty and ignorance while consolidating democracy. Aziz' speech comes days before the expiration of an ultimatum by the African Union to reinstate ousted President Ould Cheikh Abdallahi by October 6th or else face economic sanctions and isolation.
