Death toll mounts for Algeria's "worst flood in a century"

2008-10-03

The death toll from the floods in Ghardaia has risen to 31, with at least 50 injured, Algerian national radio reported on Friday (October 3rd). A Ghardaia official said Bounoura, El Atef, Daia Ben Dahoua, Guerarra, Berianne, Metlili and Sebsebhave communes have also suffered heavy damage from the rains that started on Monday, APS reported. Algerian authorities sent 400 tonnes of food, 200,000 blankets and more than a thousand tents, generators and a makeshift water-treatment plant to the districts in distress. The army has joined the civil defence in the search and rescue operations, Tout Sur l'Algerie reported. Earlier on Thursday, Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni said the floods are the worst in a century.
