Mauritania, EU pursue fishing agreement

The European Union is set to make the first payment to Mauritania for a fishing deal delayed by the August 6th military coup, EU Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg announced at a press conference on Monday (September 29th). "We have received a letter from the Mauritanian government ... confirming they would strictly observe the terms of the fisheries partnership agreement which was concluded just a few days before the coup," Reuters quoted Borg as saying. The EU has to pay 86 million euros for the right to fish in Mauritanian waters for the first year, and between 70 and 76 million euros for each of the next three years.
Also on Monday, the UAE Red Crescent Authority delivered 35 tonnes of rice, flour, oil, sugar, dates and children's food to Nouakchott to help needy families on the eve of Eid Al Fitr, Gulf press reported.
