2008-09-02

In a statement posted on Islamist websites on Monday (September 1st), Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb released details about recent terror attacks in Algeria for which it had already claimed responsibility, local and international press reported. For the first time, al-Qaeda hinted at striking the Presidency Headquarters in the El-Mouradia suburb of Algiers as part of an offensive against State institutions, El Khabar reported.

In total, the terrorist group claims to have conducted four deadly attacks: a false roadblock set up between Sériana and Batna on August 23rd, a double explosion targeting security forces in Ain-Defla on August 26th, a bomb attack in Toudja on August 27th and another fake security checkpoint the same day on the road between Batna and Merouana. According to al-Qaeda, this latest attack killed 8 soldiers.

Al-Qaeda does not mention its own losses, Tout sur l'Algerie noted on Monday (September 1st), pointing out that 10 terrorists were killed by Algerian Army troops in Ain Defla, according to an official review by the Interior Ministry, 4 terrorists were killed last week during two army operations in Lakhdaria and 4 terrorists were killed this past weekend in Chabet El-Ameur, Boumerdes wilaya.

In related news, an army officer and a business contractor died Sunday when a bomb exploded in the eastern region of Tebessa, El Watan reported on Monday (September 1st). The two men were inspecting a road construction site at the time of the attack.
