Mali conflict, al-Qaeda discord reportedly delay Austrian hostages' release
2008-08-15
Negotiations to secure the release of kidnapped Austrian couple Andrea Kloiber and Wolfgang Ebner have slowed because of discord within al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb, Italian agency AKI reported on Thursday (August 14th). The two tourists were abducted in Tunisia in February; al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. The hostages are believed to be held in the Sahara region, near the border of Algeria, Mali and Nigeria. Algeria’s Echorouk suggested that their release is stalled by ongoing conflict between the Malian government and Tuareg rebels.
