Al-Qaeda claims two recent suicide bombings in Algeria

2008-08-06

In an internet statement on Wednesday (August 6th), Al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the Tizi Ouzou suicide bomb attack Sunday which injured 25 people, local and international press reports said. The statement, which identified the deceased bomber as Makhlouf Abou-Mariam and showed his photo, added that the vehicle was laden with 600 kg of explosive material. The same statement also claimed responsibility for the July 23rd attack in which a suicide bomber on a motorcycle targeted a military convoy in Lakhdaria, injuring thirteen soldiers.

According to a statement released by the Interior Ministry, the Tizi Ouzou bomber suffered from a grave illness and depression, Tout sur l'Algerie reported on Wednesday (August 8th). "This situation was apparently exploited to push him to commit a suicide attack," the statement said.
