2008-07-30
Tunisian President Zine al Abidine Ben Ali officially announced his intention to run for re-election next year at the annual congress of the ruling Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) party Wednesday (July 30th) in Tunis, Reuters reported. "I tell you with all pride: I'm always faithful to my commitment and answer you with all honour -- I will be your candidate for the 2009 presidential elections," Ben Ali was quoted by Reuters as saying. Ben Ali has been president of Tunisia since 1987. If he wins the election next year, the 71-year-old could remain president until 2014.
