Amnesty International representative denies arrest
2008-07-27
Amnesty International's representative in Algiers, Mehieddine Bachir, denied reports of his arrest by the police, saying he was subject to a "routine security check" at a checkpoint, El Khabar reported Sunday (July 27th). Bachir said security agents tried to verify his credentials after finding a copy of the rights group's 2008 report in his trunk. The Socialist Forces Front opposition party had condemned the "arrest", calling it a violation of personal and collective freedom, El Khabar reported.
