Returning Mauritanian refugees seek to reclaim land
2008-07-21
Some of the 4,000 Mauritanian refugees who began returning last January to their homeland are facing difficulties reclaiming their property after 20 years in exile, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on Monday (July 21st). The refugees' land was appropriated in 1989 when they fled to Senegal and Mali. In Mauritania, the National Agency for the Reception and Integration of Refugees (ANAIR) says local authorities are currently preparing to receive people's land claims. "We have done a village by village study to map out how we can respond to each claim," ANAIR chief Moussa Fall said.
