Algeria: no objections to UM headquarters in Morocco

By Achira Mammeri for Magharebia in Algiers—21/07/08

Algeria is unopposed to setting up the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean in Morocco, Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci told Magharebia on Friday (July 18th), denying press speculation that King Mohammed VI’s absence from the Union's July 13th launch summit was linked to Algeria’s alleged stance on the matter. "[Morocco's] King had objective reasons for not going to Paris, which had absolutely nothing to do with Algeria," Medelci said.

Along with France, Malta and Tunisia, Morocco is currently under consideration to host the organisation's headquarters and general secretariat. "We have never expressed any objections to this, either behind closed doors or publicly," Medelci told Magharebia. Foreign affairs ministers will decide the UM location at a November 3rd meeting in Marseille "by consensus," AFP quoted the French ambassador in Tunis Serge Degallaix as saying.
