New round of talks between Mali, Tuareg rebels begins in Algiers

2008-07-21

Negotiations between a delegation of the government of Mali and Tuareg rebels resumed Friday (July 18th) in Algiers, local press reported. APS quoted a diplomatic source as saying discussions are proceeding in a spirit of determination to reach an accord regarding the continuing conflict in Mali's Kidal region. Officials attending the talks said on Sunday that Algerian mediator and ambassador to Mali Abdelkrim Gehraieb might soon announce progress, despite the abduction Saturday of three police officers Tessalit in northern Mali by Tuareg rebels.

The discussions in Algiers follow a 3-day meeting in Bamako last week between an Algerian military delegation and Malian military officials regarding joint patrols and intelligence exchanges. The security co-operation plan aims to combat Tuareg rebel activity, smugglers and al-Qaeda terrorist groups on the Saharan border.
