Kidnapped Austrian hostage calls son

2008-06-15

Kidnapped al-Qaeda hostage Wolfgang Ebner was allowed a telephone conversation with his son, Austrian media reported on Saturday (June 14th). "The telephone call a few days ago was the sign of life we had been waiting for 110 days," AFP quotes Austrian foreign ministry spokesman Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal as saying. Austrian tourists Wolfgang Ebner and Andrea Kloiber were abducted February 18th in Tunisia; the North African branch of al-Qaeda claimed responsibility on February 22nd. The Austrian government, which is helped by the Mali government in negotiations to free the hostages, has not commented on the kidnappers' demands or ultimatums.
