Clashes between students, police leave one dead in Marrakesh

2008-05-18

One student was killed, several others injured and hundreds more arrested in clashes with police last week in Marrakesh, DPA cited El Tajdid as saying on Friday (May 16th). The victim fell from a fourth-floor window on a university campus. The students were demanding better lodging and the readmission of classmates who had been expelled. The rioters threw stones at the police officers, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

‘Death of a student’. The news is a truly a shame. Unfortunately, the correspondent of the daily ‘Atahqiq’ didn’t cover one of the rumours which spread during the bloody demonstrations between security officers and university students. Security teams interfered only after the students attacked public property by vandalising and setting fire to buildings. And some exploited the general chaos to plunder and rob their colleagues of their belongings and money. As a journalist, I followed the topic from the city of Marrakesh, I confirm that the clashes caused injuries on both sides. The students used stones to rain upon the security officers, and they put up barriers and closed outlets leading to the university campus. Some of them were armed with knives and iron chains. On the other hand security officers used tear gas and rubber shots. They invaded the campus and detained large numbers of students, some of them were released on Thursday while other are still being interrogated.
