Algerian authorities ready to join EU Neighbourhood Policy
2008-04-20
Algerian authorities expressed their will to join the EU Neighbourhood Policy initiative during EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner's visit to Algiers last month, Algerian press quoted spokesperson Christiane Hohmann as saying last week. Several local newspapers reported on Sunday (April 20th) that Hohmann said the European Union hails the Algerian position. Hohmann told Algerian reporters at the press conference that the EU is ready to send experts to Algeria to help the country in the fields of human rights and banking reforms, especially in the context of Algeria bid for accession to the WTO.

The Algerian authorities say they are ready to adhere to a neighbourhood policy with the European Union. This is a goal the Algerians will not be able to achieve! I am talking about those who hold present-day Algeria’s fate. The European Union is an entity sensitive to contagions: Algeria or, rather, the ensemble of the countries of North Africa, play host to so many contagious diseases. The European Union is aware of any danger of contamination, and, in order to combat this scourge or epidemic, the Maastricht Ordinance was made public to warn the wanting undesirables of the resident countries of the conditions that must be fulfilled simply to greet the Union. The countries on the Southern Coast of the Mediterranean do not have the means to fulfil these conditions, especially in the realm of public freedoms and constitutional democracies. Algeria is not only getting a bit icy, it is suffering from frostbite! It cannot match—not even slightly—the European Union’s political developments. The Algerian authorities, who never fail to inconsiderately make ambitious declarations in favour of a "self-sufficient" Algeria, are prisoners of their own leadership’s mentality. They are nevertheless sewing up the internal tears littering the Algerian carpet, of which the black Spring of Kabyliya is an example. That said, this is hampering any attempt at adhering to Europe, which is too big of a dream for the Algerian authorities. Chihab-25
